Biography Of The Kalmoni Family (Net Worth , History) - Prior to the First World War, Salem Kalmoni, the present Managing Director of Japan Motors Ghana, arrived in Ghana from Lebanon to begin some commercial activities. Kalmoni & Sons quickly expanded into truck boards, and in 1958 he imported the first Japanese automobile, a Datsun, a brand name that was eventually renamed to the world-famous Nissan.
In 1965, Kalmoni & Sons was renamed Japan Motors. It now has five branches in Ghana and employs over 330 people.
Jalal Kalmoni, Salem Kalmoni, and their cousin, Nouhad Kalmoni, are the heirs of the Kalmoni wealth and own Japan Motors and Silver Star Auto. Salah Kweku Kalmoni, the other Kalmoni brother, is in charge of the family’s real estate businesses, which include Advance Constructions, Lakeside Estates, and Silver Star Tower.
The Kalmonis made their fortune through their automobile company, Japan Motors, which is comprised of seven companies: Silver Star Auto Limited, Modern Automobile Services (MAS, formerly Enyidado Industries Limited), Oman Fofor Trading Company Limited, Advance Construction & Development Limited, Lakeside Estate/Agri-Cattle Limited, Silver Star Tower Limited, and Star Property Management Limited.
Japan Motors is the exclusive dealer of NISSAN in Ghana, with a market share of 26% of new car sales in Ghana. They are also the sole distributor of YAMAHA Motor, which controls 80% of the Ghanaian motorcycle market.
Kalmoni’s Modern Automobile Services deals in a wide range of cars from Korea and China and is a major distributor of TATA automobiles in Ghana and West Africa, with an on-road presence of 7,000 vehicles. In Ghana, Modern Auto Services also has the franchise for SsangYong, Lifan, and Foton heavy duty vehicles.
Oman Fofor Trading Company Ltd is also the exclusive authorized distributor of Canon Products in the Sultanate of Oman. It is Ghana’s leading retailer of photocopiers.
Advance Construction is a Lakeside Estate-based construction firm that operates a block factory.
Between 2001 and 2011, Lakeside Real Estate Company developed around 700 properties in Ghana for the middle and higher classes.
The Silver Star Tower skyscraper in Accra is managed by Silver Star Tower. Star Property Management, a division of Silver Star Tower, also owns properties in Accra’s most exclusive neighborhoods, including the Exams Tower Residence in North Ridge and the Duplex Villas in Accra’s Airport West Residential Area.
Silver Star Auto Limited, as Mercedes-General Benz’s Distributor, is Ghana’s largest dealer in the sale and service of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as well as the sale of spare parts.
