Since July 1, 2016, Godfrey Motsa has served as MTN Group Limited’s Vice President of South and East Africa. From April 1, 2015 to January 12, 2016, Mr. Motsa was the Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom Group Limited’s Consumer Business Unit. Mr. Motsa was the Chief Operating Officer of Vodacom Group Limited.

In 2005, he became the head of brand marketing at Vodacom SA. He formerly served as the Managing Director of Vodacom Lesotho and Vodacom Congo. He has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland, as well as an MBA from Thames Valley University.

His entry into the MTN Group has resulted in a protracted legal dispute between MTN and its competitor Vodacom. A legal fight that began in 2016 after MTN Group named him VP of South and East Africa. Vodacom sued MTN Group, alleging that Godfrey’s nomination violates a written trade agreement between the two businesses.

MTN Group defended its position by stating that “Godfrey Motsa’s appointment by MTN operations in the South and East Africa area (excluding South Africa) and his placement in the region will be in accordance with his trade restraint.”

A lower court in Johannesburg determines that the agreement “forbids him from working for any firm that participates in comparable commercial operations as Vodacom during that period.”

The agreement also prohibits him from “having purview of and/or directly or indirectly exercising influence or control over [MTN] or the business performed by [MTN] in South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, or Lesotho.”

His nomination as the substantive CEO of the South African branch suggests that MTN Group has been playing its joker from the start.

MTN now ranks second in terms of market share, with 30.55 million customers, accounting for 35.9% of the overall mobile market. Vodacom, its main competitor, has 32.12 million members, accounting for 37.7% of the overall market.

To successfully dethrone Vodacom, the company will need strong-willed leadership and an experienced CEO who understands his previous employer’s weaknesses.
